From Insights: Is Your HR Function Ready for 2027? 5 Signs Your HR Processes Need a Year-End Reset
These are people-process issues first, not simply HR department issues.
- Your 2027 training plan looks a lot like your 2026 plan
If next year’s courses are being selected mainly by repeating previous requests, the organisation may be training people without first identifying the capability gaps that matter most. - Performance management only becomes urgent at appraisal time
If goals are unclear, evidence has not been documented and poor performance is only discussed at year-end, the appraisal meeting is already too late to fix the process. - Payroll is processed, but few people can explain the result
Payroll software can calculate what it has been configured to calculate. HR and payroll teams still need to understand the statutory treatment, employee data and controls behind the numbers. - Different managers handle the same HR issue differently
Leave, working arrangements, performance problems and disciplinary matters become higher-risk when decisions depend on individual interpretation rather than consistent HR practice. - Policies exist, but nobody checks whether practice still matches them
Employment requirements change, organisations change and old practices can continue long after the original reason for them has disappeared. A policy file alone does not create compliance.
DID YOU KNOW?
Management & Leadership was the most in-demand skill area in HRD Corp’s National Training Index 2024.
Strong people processes still depend on managers; how they set expectations, give feedback, document issues and handle difficult conversations.

Four Questions to Settle Before 2027
Your HR plan becomes more useful when it starts with the business problem rather than the course title.
01 PLAN: Are we developing the capabilities the business actually needs?
- What will employees need to do differently in 2027?
- Where are the real competency gaps?
- Is this actually a training problem?
- Which development needs should come first?
Think capability first. Then build the training plan.
02 PERFORM: Do managers know how to turn expectations into performance?
- Set meaningful KPIs and goals
- Give evidence-based feedback
- Address underperformance early
- Handle difficult conversations
Good appraisal starts long before the appraisal meeting.
03 PROTECT: Can everyday HR decisions withstand scrutiny?
- Employment terms and working arrangements
- Leave and employee entitlements
- Performance and disciplinary issues
- Termination and other high-risk decisions
Knowing the rule is important. Applying it consistently is the harder part.
04 COMPLY: Is payroll correct, or does it simply run?
- Employee and payroll data
- Statutory deductions and contributions
- PCB / MTD treatment
- Payroll records and reconciliations
The best time to find a payroll problem is before year-end reporting begins.
2027 HR Readiness Check
- Does our 2027 training plan address real capability gaps?
- Are managers setting and managing performance consistently?
- Can HR explain the basis behind key employment decisions?
- Can payroll staff explain the statutory treatment behind the system?
If you answered “NO” to several: Start with the underlying capability, performance, compliance or process gap, not simply another course.
